8/3/09 Using Your Good Haircutting Shears on Synthetic Hair, Not Good Mojo, for Your Shears That Is!

Synthetic hair used in weaves and extensions can be rough on your shears!  We suggest you use a different pair when cutting synthetic hair.  You can use an old pair or buy an inexpensive pair to cut the synthetic hair.  Save your favorite haircutting shears for the real deal; real hair!  Weaves and Extensions are popular right now, and though they look and feel like real hair, the moleculer structure makes them dull your shears faster!  So keep the sharpener away another day and use your good shears on real hair and have a pair that you use ONLY on synthetic hair!  Fromm's Genesis shears are a great example of an inexpensive shear you should use. Hair Tattooing, Tribal Hair Cutting, is also sometimes called carving. Any Stylist or Barber that does it is a talented Artists. It requires imagination, talent, and mad skills to Hair Tattoo. 5/14/09 Tondeo Razors & Razor Blades Were Impossible to Find in the USA, Until Today!

I recently was on the Internet looking at a regular customers website (a very high end Salon's) It was very nice, very appealing and hip. If your business doesn't have a website, I suggest you get one. It is a great way to market and can be as simple as adding your business to a Yahoo Local Listing, a Facebook page, MySpace page or even Wikipedia!  More and more people are turning to the Internet rather than the local phone book and how are they going to find you, if you aren't there?

There are professionals that you can hire to design professional websites and even social networking site profiles for your business or you. If your Barbershop, Salon, Spa, or Professional Pet Grooming business is small, and you don't have the resources to pay a pro, you can easily use these free forums to advertise and market. Even if you don't own your own business, promote yourself for FREE! Let people know where you are and include your hours of operation. If you are technologically challenged, never fear, most teenagers can show you how and some will be happy to do it for you!  You can even do this if you don't own a computer.  Local Libraries have FREE computers that you can use.

• Clothing, but this one is tricky, you can only deduct the costs of uniforms.  If you work in a salon, shop or spa that has a uniform vest, apron, or smock, this is a deduction.  You cannot deduct the latest Gucci rags just because you want to look cute!  Professional Pet Groomers have much more leeway here.  If you buy it to wear to work ONLY, then it can be considered a uniform.

3/31/09 How to Test Your Hair Cutting Shears Sharpness

How Sharp are You?  Did you know that your dull hair cutting shears don't cut cleanly and can actually damage your client's hair?  And for you Professional Pet Groomers, why work harder than you already do?
Try these test to evaluate your shear sharpness:
Can you cut a wet facial tissue with your shears?
Do they cut from the tip to the ride line (where your blades meet at the screw)?
Do they chew that Kleenex or pull at it, ripping it? 
Another way to check; dangle a piece of thread WITHOUT keeping it taunt and try cutting it.  Start from the pivot of your shears (where the screw joins the blades' of your shears) and cut the thread numerous times, going down your blades, This way you test your blades from the top, to middle and all the way to your tips! 
Your shears should cut in all areas on your blades.  If your shears snag the thread, or if they fold the thread, first check their tension.  If your tension is too loose, your shears will fold hair. If you tension is right and they still don't cut hair well, it is time to get out those back-up shears out and send the dull ones to your Sharpener!

3/10/09 How to Change Blades in Your Fromm Shaper Razor, Jaquar Edge Razor, and Edge Ahead Texturizing Razors!

How to Replace the Blades in Your Hair Cutting Razors: 

Step 1: Place end of blade closest to the handle of the razor against ledge on the side of the replacement blade dispenser.

                        

 

Step 2: Use ledge on dispenser to carefully push the blade toward the end of razor. The blade fits tightly into the razor, so some force may be necessary.

Step 3: Do not remove the replacement blade from dispenser. Align the end of the channel in the razor with the end of a replacement blade in the dispenser.

Step 4: Slide the razor to the far end of the dispenser, keeping razor parallel to the blade.

Step 5: Use the razor to lift the blade out of the dispenser. Dispose of used blade safely.

These instructions apply to Fromm Premium Styling Razor #108, Jaguar Edge Razor #JG300, Edge-Ahead Texture Razors #112R, #113R, #114R and #115R, and to replacement blades #109, #110TB, #JG301 and #JG302.

3/5/09 Despite the Huge Snow That Blanketed the East Just Days Ago, Spring is On the Way & So Are Increased Earnings!

Hairstylist and Barbers know Spring is here when the shops fill up with young women and men wanting a new look for the Prom.  Some salons we have been to are already planning for this all important day, ordering extra bobbie pins, sprays, baby's breath and other ardornments for the young ladies hair.  A few Barbers have already started booking appointments for the young men, to get their hair "cleaned up" or get a new hair cut.

2/18/09 Hair Cutting Professionals Tax Tips Don't Forget Those Deductions!

If you haven't gotten your taxes done yet but are planning on it, remember your deductions!

Whether you are a Hair Stylist, a Barber, or a Professional Groomer, we all have to turn in our taxes to the IRS by April 15th.  We just want to remind you to not forget your deductions!  Since most of us have to purchase our own hair cutting tools, hair dryers, razors, gloves, etc. to perform our jobs, many things you use everyday ARE tax deductions!  Keep reciepts and invoices for everything you buy.  These expenses add up into a tax deductions and can DECREASE what you owe the IRS or INCREASE your refund!

                                                                      

Some things hair cutting professionals forget to itemize as deductions are:  subscriptions to industry publications, continuing education costs, appointment books, or appointment booking services, advertising costs, even business cards! 

Check with your tax preparer, or if doing your own taxes, consult the IRS website or offices for what is and what is not a tax deduction.  And since you are getting a refund now, be sure to check out some of new and exciting products, like that new razor you have had your eye on, new shears or a case or holster to protect your investment in your shears!
